Hone your fly fishing skills near your home.

Years ago top fly fisher Al Perryman, who also grew up blocks from the river, told me that we were honing our skills here in Sacramento on the Lower American River and other near by fisheries.

He said if you put your time in learning how to fly cast, read the water, tie your knots right and keep you hooks sharp that when you traveled to some more remote better fisheries it would pay off for you.

Well it is still good advise....

That is so true, years ago before I dedicated myself to fly fishing I would fish for bass in Folsom lake. Often times I would start to question my abilities until I traveled to the Delta or Clear Lake.

Well those days are over because now I'm humbled everywhere I go :)
