I submit that flows on the Smith are currently above optimum for fly fishing

If you're serious about doing that, someone else besides you will be telling us "how it
went!"

This fell tuesday. The forcast calls 2 to 3 inches of rain tomorrow and the snow level is going up to 4000 ft. plus the storms are stacking up.

why it is almost fishable at a mere 40,000 cfs now - dropped over 60,000 cfs in 16 hours but I am sure it will head back up with the next storm barreling in - was calling for over 13 inches of rain in a couple of days up there

If it rains 3" in Crescent City it rains FAR more in the upper parts of the drainage.
8" to 10" 24 hour totals are pretty common in the hills behind Crescent City during these big storms. In 1980 there was a weather station on Gasquet Mountain that recorded 262" of rainfall in one winter........

Sounds like Forks. A couple of years ago we had 2 ft of snow on the ground and it rained 9 inches overnight with 80 mph wind gusts. Trees were snapping like toothpick all around my house. The next morning 200 ft cedars were floating down the Sol Duc.

Kiene's isn't stocking the new depleted-uranium-core tips?

a 100-year, 24 hour rainfall in the Smith watershed is around 13 inches of rain

Most of the Kiene krowd is probably familiar with the 1964 high water signs along the Eel
River. The Smith experienced much the same. Believe flood stage at the Dr. Fine 101
bridge is around 33'; in December, 1964, it peaked at 45'. Double whammy for that area as the tsunami occurred on Good Friday of that same year. Resilient country and people!

1964 flood the Smith got to 228,000 cfs and the Eel an amazing 752,000 cfs. The cows at Fernsale wound up being shark fodder as out to sea they went. Smith peaked yesterday at about 106,000 cfs

Good stuff, Gordon.
For a few years, at Klamath Glen, they used to have a cow/steer in the corral
there that had been rescued out of the ocean in Dec '64. Most of the 101 bridges
were washed out. Quite a rescue project! A realtor in Garberville had a number
of photos of the "event."
Good to hear from you, Gordon. Hope Feb is good for you.
Best,
Larry S

the smith is fishable.didnt get water temp but i had about 4-6 inches of visibility. spent 2 hours there.. found some riffles and holding water... 2 ldr..1 swam to the fast water and the oter wrapped me around the many submerged trees. saw another guy hook up but his went to the fast water as well.

big ugly flies didnt work.. spent 1.5 hours swinging.. then switched up to the indo.. and got 2 hits within 15 minutes. nothing after that.. plus i ran out of time...looks like I will be visiting again in the near future... that trip was just a teaser for me..

id like to thank to everyone who provided me answers to my questions on the other thread. much appreciated.
