They rock. They're fun to call in. Had one land right on my arrow in the tree stand once while hunting.

Interesting you would say that blueracer. This bird was called in with a iPod app. My first attempt at calling in birds to photograph.

Yes..yes, it may very well be :-)

Its funny, as Ive done research, theres sure some sensitive birders out there. A lot of bird watchers frown on photographers because we desire to get very close to birds. And this can stress them out (hmmm sounds a lot like another sport/hobby we all partake in. lol) A lot of those folks are against calling in birds with recorded bird calls. but those same people "chum" them in with feeders.... Oblah-de oblah-da :-)

In some people's minds, everything somebody else does stresses something. In truth though, I think it's those folks who are the "stressed" ones and let 'em be so!

I took my Ipod out to the woods today to test drive this bird call thing. Well, it definitly feels like cheating! The chickadees swarmed like flies. I commenced to call in every bird I suspected to be in this area with the exception of a pileated woodpecker. I was shocked with how quickly the birds responded to recordings of their specific calls.

They all showed up in less than 30 seconds of playing their calls. I wasnt happy with any of the photos I got aside from the chickadees.

so heres the chickadee show :-)

jbird:
Great shots! You and Mike M are the best. Are you using "birdcaller" for your
ipod/iphone app? I've had fun with this one. Should be a line about a "twitter"
post somewhere here.
I've always been amazed at the ability to "winter over" by so many birds. We did see
a big winter kill one December back on the Smith River. Even the water puddles
on the gravel bars were frozen solid.
Think you guys just had a big winter storm roll thru the Midwest. Another one on its way.
Some No Coast rivers may blow out this weekend. Our mountains need the snow
Best,

Larry, The most user friendly one Im using is called Chirp! USA. I like it cause theres a couple hundred birds and you can make a favorites file so you dont have to wade thru all those birds to find the ones you want. But the great thing about it is each bird call is an audio loop, so it plays until you stop it.

Then I splurged and got the big north american audubon bird guide. Its like having a comprehensive book in an app. Everything youd want to know about 770 species in n. america. Each bird has multiple calls you can listen to which is really interesting. The bummer is, each call is from 5-20 seconds and you have to tap it to replay.

My next toy is going to be a speaker that I can outfit to hang on my truck window so I can call them from the warmth of my truck when its below zero... which it is now :-(

I did see the west coast is about to get slammed. Should be just about the right timing for the Smith when it drops back to 11-9 feet at Jed!

Such cool little birds.
Fun to watch them run all over the tree.
We have em here year round.
We call em the "cheeseburger" birds.
Its sounds like they are saying..."cheeseburger", when they sing.
