Hi Tony

We both remember when the rods were almost all 2 piece and those cool 3 piece rods came out about maybe 15 years ago?

3 piece was king for a while then it went to 4 piece.

I liked the 3 piece because there was no furrel in the middle where the most stress was.

Now for local fishing and boat fishing 2 piece is fine. Just one furrel to come loose.

G Loomis still makes a one piece saltwater series.

He is a busy guy. Don't feel bad I'm his friend and we go months without talking. He'll pop up again sooner or later.

Bill, you hit it right on about the ferrels. Rods with even number of sections have a ferrel right at the mid-point of the bend. Odd number section rods (1-3-5-etc.) do NOT have a ferrel at the mid-point.

Now, as for convenience, a one piece just isn't very practical except rigged in a boat. A five or seven piece rod is good for travel but has a few too many pieces to be to my liking.

With that being said, a three piece to me is just right for travel and has a solid section at the mid-point of the rod giving it the most strength where it is needed.

I can honestly say that I've never broken a three piece rod at a ferrel. I have broken plenty of rods (thank God for warranties) while fighting good fish, though most have been when high-sticking and getting too close when landing one.

Good food for thought, TONY
