My first real trip to Del Valle to fish for trout on the fly rod. I have fished it for years but never tried to fly fish for trout. I tied some olive leaches and a couple olive woolly buggers and hit the lake to give it a good try to see if I could actually get some fish on the fly. I went with an intermediate sink line and that seemed to be the ticket. The fish were shallow and I think that helped me. I started catching small trout but then was surprised by a couple real nice ones. I think it was beginers luck but it sure was fun. I think I will be trying this a little more often.

Del Valle is like a lakeside resort only 10 miles south of Livermore.

Nice fish, nice pull?? I'd imagine. Those are some pigs! You are addicted now, time to sell the conventional gear and sell off the kids to buy the fly rod arsinal.:D

I've caught a few from there with a black bugger over the past few years. Fun stuff. Were you trolling with your fly rod or just stopped, cast, and retrieve? I mostly trolled with my electric motor with my fly rod and the bugger.

Sounds like a good trip to me! I've been thinking about hitting up Del Valle lately but was unsure of the fly fishing oprotunities. I'm only 45 min away but have never fished it but have heard good things. I think I'll head up that way sometime next week, hopefully I'll get into some hogs like the ones in your pic!
