Subject: Young salmon made it through San Joaquin this year

Hello Folks,

Some good news.

Not a bad showing for the salmon restoration in the San Joaquin. Please note this restoration program is under nearly continuous attack by some in Congress, and is usually clumped in with attacks on the salmon-friendly restrictions on Delta pumping and parts of the CVPIA intended to rebuild salmon runs.

Young salmon made it through San Joaquin this year

Near Friant Dam this year, federal wildlife officials released 96 young salmon outfitted with tiny acoustic transmitters in the San Joaquin River.

The fish were being tracked as part of an experiment in the restoration of the river. About half made it through the 149 miles of river where the vast restoration project is happening.

The odds were against most of them making it all the way to the Pacific Ocean. There just too many hazards and too few fish. And the tracking devices stop working after a while, so no one knows for sure.

The experiment, which will continue next year, was much bigger than those 96 fish. A total of 1,200 young salmon were released. Officials said 192 had tracking devices. It would be too expensive to put transmitters on all the fish.

Not all were released near Friant Dam. The other release point was San Mateo crossing on the Valley's west side. I was more interested in the fish that made the longer trip from Friant Dam.

According to the 2006 restoration agreement, salmon are supposed to officially re-introduced to the river by the end of next year. But this experiment will likely go several years because officials want to understand how the fish react across a range of wet and dry winters.

By the way, the 1,200 salmon came from the state Fish and Game Department hatchery on the Feather River.

I would love to see this project succeed. I've spent numerous weeks over the last year doing field work for this project. It's hard to invision salmon in that cest pool as it exists now. We'll see how it looks in the future!
