Notice how they roll and breath.....this is how you find them.

These small ones are fun and mostly jump a lot.

Boy it would be hard to get anything done if you lived in that area.

Baby Tarpon are all over the tropics in close to the shore, back in lagoons and up little creeks and drainage canals. They are even in many small lakes so they can be land locked in fresh water too.

South Floirda is loaded with them and the summer months or any time it is warm they will bite a fly.

It is very much like warm water fishing for panfish and bass.

They can be from a foot long to over 20 pounds.

They can be very aggressive and jump like crazy....

Great post Bill. Love those little sh%^& in Belize inner caye lagoons. Sneek in, and if no rollers, bang the boat with the pole. Still tough to hook. john

Hi John

They say they are harder to hook than bigger Tarpon maybe because they are so fast?

They are one of my favorite fish.....

I put that video clip up her because it has so much good fottage of them rolling.

Ive been in the Keys in early October. In the back country there are pods of tarpon rolling as far as the eye could see in every direction. It was simply mind numbing. And theres very little pressure. That would be a great time to DIY a tarpon trip down there. The resident tarpon are incredibly abundant and the fishing pressure is zero. Just carry a GPS to find your way back.

How close to Orlando is it to baby tarpon fishing. I am finally heading to Orlando this year and get to fish a whole day and maybe two while I am there. I plan to fish Mosquito lagoon and if I can sneak in another day I would love to go for baby tarpon. We are just trying to figure out when to go for good weather. Disney World and Universal are the main reason we are going but my wife knows if I go anywhere I am going fishing while we are there.

April/May/June is prime time for Tarpon in FL but any warm months are good for resedent smaller ones.

We decided last night we are going in May. I think you might need to take a vacation in May so we can drive down and spend a day with you and Marilyn. The girls can do whatever and me and you can go fishing.

Scott

I was just emailing with my friend Eric Davis who is a top FL guide and owns 'The Backcountry' in Vero Beach, FL.

http://www.verobackcountry.com/

He said the baby Tarpon are usually good from May thru August.

He could guide you in the Sebastian River which is only about 1.5 hours south of Orlando.

PS: We are going to FL again in Feb for a month so I don't think we will be able to be there in May.

My father in law is 86, and goes to the Campeche area twice a year - occasionally I get to tag along. While his double haul is still wonderful, his balance and stamina are not....and Baby Tarpon allow him to still get into a jumping fish without getting overly tired...

Great place, uncrowded, neat folks, really good food...
