Looks like we need more steelhead pictures besides Langenbecks Rogue river beauties.

Spent last week with a few buddies in Washingnton swinging our spey rods for steelhead. My 7th annual trip did not disappoint. I had my best morning ever, I hooked 6 and landed 5 before breakfast. The next day I got skunked. Best fies were green butt skunk, coal car, steelhead coachman and green butt silver hilton. I used a tip on a few runs but never hooked up , so all fish were caught on a floating line. My friend Jimmy from Idaho caught 5 on his first run of the morning on his 44th b-day.

Fished the Snake but never hooked up.

first fish of the trip.

great report - I can't think of another river that is more ideally suited to flyfishing for steelhead with more habitat per mile!!!!!

Great report, thanks for sharing. I am glad you included a picture of a steelhead, it was been so long since I landed one I was beginning to forget how they looked.

Ya, I took that last picture on my last morning there. It's a beautiful glassy tailout and there were fish all over the place, rolling thrashing and jumping clear out of the water. Would have been a great place for a skater but I did not have any on me.....next year.

One evening I fished the mouth at the Snake and a polite friendly gear guy asked if he could come fish behind. I said sure. I asked how the fishing has been and where the bucket was on the run(of course I had already past it). He said the fishing has been good this year, not as good as 2009 but good. The proir weekend he said he caught 12 on friday, 18 on saturday but only one on Sunday. He said his buddy caught 480 fish. I thought the number was how many he has caught in his life time but the number only represented this season. In 2009 he caught over 550 steelhead. To put this in perspective I was elated with 9 fish in 5 days. The guy started fishing behind me and immediately hooked up. I did not get a grab.

The big ram in the photo was checking out his haram across the river. I saw him walk down the cliff, walk along the road past my vehicle which my friend Leo was sitting in. Then he swam accross the river and started harrassing the ewes. We see the big ram most years but I never saw him swim accross the river, very cool.
