Caught and released this recycled hatchery fish on a glo bug. Note the punch in the gill plate.

What does the punch mean?

The punch is for the hatchery folks so they don't double count the fish if it returns to the hatchery the second time.

they should start a new breed of punk fish by putting gill rings through the punch

It has been to the hatchery and may or may not have spawned. This recycled fish was about 40 miles downstream(near the town of Rogue River) from the hatchery at the base of Lost Creek Dam.

Once the hatchery reaches its quota, it trucks steelhead downstream to give anglers another shot at them. If theres lots of early fish showing up, theyll do it with early fish too. Sometimes fish will be recylcled more than once. Ive caught several fish with 2 punches. Ive heard of fish with 3.
