Havent heard much about good ol pyramid lake. We all know that this is an excellent fishery w/ the average fish around 18-20in(rats), and the chance at 10#ers in a season of fishing.

How has it been fishing?

I haven't been able to get out, but I just got a call from a buddy who lives there and the fishing is still good from a float tube. Midnight cowboy and popcorn beetle fished in 15-25' of water has been good to him. He landed a 12# hen yesterday. water temps are in the upper 50's.

Gangster- Don't wait for a good report to go, just get out there. It will fish well for the next few weeks and when water temps drop into the 40's things will slow way down.

Finally got out to pyramid yesterday. Very nice weather after the storm. Well atleast nice compared to what im used to. The fishing was ok....but nothing great. Very small fish compared to what we are used to seeing. I landed 3 fish and farmed 2. They were all baby "rats. Between about 15-17"...tiny for pyramid. I even saw one caught at about 8in. We started at the south end and caught all the fish down there....we drove all the way up to monument and didnt have any luck up north but figured we'd do some scouting for bigger fish. The north area looks like itd be good w/ a tube or an indicator. BUt too snaggy for strippn the bottom around there.

All in all it was a good day out on the lake. The lady at the creel station said the last 2 weeks people have been catching these little fish. Cmon cold weather....bring in the big boys!

I think that you just go anytime between November and April.

I think spring has more numbers of fish.

I would stay away from the full moons.

Having bad weather can be good for catching.

Pretty good odds for the cutthroat of your life! about 28-30" give or take depending on condition will be about 10LB. In winter months I think you're looking for the big solitary prowler that hops up on the shelf to scare the bejeezus out of the rest!

Probably one of the best places near here (Sacramento) to catch a huge trout on a fly rod.

Bill your right w/ those full moons. This is my 3rd season out there and every day ive fished after a full moon is garabage! You just gotta put in your time to catch the big numbers and big fish. Its hit and miss at times. But thats fishing.

Went out to pyramid this morning....what a zoo. Should have figured w/ it being thanksgiving weekend and nice weather. Even slower than last weekend w/ all this warm weather. Didnt see many fish caught. I got one rat today...went 1 for 1. DOnt know if i'll be back out til we see a change in weather. Needs to cool off to bring in the fish.

They posted water temps about 2 weeks ago, and it was still pretty warm (high 40's/low 50's) to a depth of over 100'. With the surface cooling, there's probably some convection currents moving around that are shifting fish.

I went out during the 07 new years flood and got a good view of some of the surface currents because the Truckee was spilling in really muddy. Water ran north from the inlet up the east shore past Dago until it hit Anaho Island. From there it turned 90° west and came straight across the lake smacking right into Sandhole (reason for its depth?). I'm guessing that's colder at the moment as well as the very shallows (unless they're getting warm with the sun). Trying to think where there'd be some upwelling.

Don't the dragon flies start moving around about now looking for new beds?

Good luck. I'm banned from casting at the moment :(

I've been fishing it hard since opener and had some dynamite days, 50+/days one weekend way back in November when we camped out there. It's totally been dead from shore for over a month now. Went out 5 times last week and only caught one fish.
Big problem is with the lake changing levels, most all the ledges are tough to reach. The guys casting spoons next to me landed about 5 nice fish, I got skunked because I couldn't cast far enough to get to the ledge. I have caught fish usually 2-5/day most all over the lake if they are biting though. In the last month I've gotten skunked more days than I've caught fish.

Last Saturday for about 7 hr at Wino. No fish hooked, 2 bumps for our group of four all pulling a variety of streamers. Saw only one fish hooked and landed out of the heart of the hole. A real solid fish around the 9-10lb mark to fellow from Redding, his best fish which was great a see (it was his only fish of the day I think). Lots of coming and going by others which gave me the generally slow impression.

Rob,
Thanks, makes sense that it has to get a little stirred up.

Do you know anything about the "dragonfly nymph migration"? I know there a lot of them in there and heard a story about them moving to?/from? deeper water in Jan/Feb. Have had luck on occasion around this time with heavily hacked brown/black buggers sitting on a weedbed, would land fish with a ton of weeds in their mouth. Maybe the weeds slid down the line, but it felt like the takes were while the fly was in the junk.

There are a ton of Dragon flies in the lake. Not much for weeds though. Personally I think they move out into deeper water and then move toward shore in the spring to hatch. I have caught fish when I know for sure I had weeds on my fly. But it's cutthroats so who knows. Maybe we should tie some flies out of weeds. Oxygen levels in Pyramid very a lot. The alkalinity plays a big part. I am hoping that the fish are fat and happy somewhere and will show up soon. In the back of my mind I am worried about the stocking practices over the past few years and I hope that it is not starting to take affect on the numbers. Hope to hell I am wrong. We shall see.

Friend of Mine caught a 13.2 yesterday. Weighed it in a net and released it unharmed. Only grab of the day. I'll take it
