Very cool Mike. Kestrels are like king fishers for me. they can smell me comin a mile off :-( In your adventures, if you can find a pasture or property with som worn old fence posts, it can be well worth the time to wait for birds to get on them. The posts have character and you get the pastel background. Sky backgrounds can be tough for exposure if its not dark blue.

Heres a couple examples. We drove all around the valley to find a field with these posts and we would go here and slowly drive along looking for birds and shoot them out of the car window on beanbags.

PS Forgive me for adding photos to your photo thread. I will remove them if youd like.

Jbird,

I appreciate your comment about havin' a sky background and it's definitely a consideration, however in the country I was workin' in, this was the only fence post for miles that wasn't steel! Everything else was old dead tree branches..

An immature Red-Tail, (I think, but I've never seen one with such a white chest.)

I sure enjoyed your "fence post " pic's from Oregon. There's nothin' like those Rogue Valley moss and lichen covered old posts!

BTW, instead of bean bags you should get one of these...and use with a ball head (need a 3/8" thread or a 3/8-1/4" adapter)

Don't worry about your pic's ..Leave 'em up for folks to enjoy!

Thats an awesome shot Mike. Hawks on posts are just so hard to approach. Im hoping to see some owls this winter around here, havent had the fortune of photographing an owl yet.

I actually have a very similar window mount as the one you posted. I use it quite a bit cause my camera/lens is pretty compact. The guy I used to shoot with in Oregon had one of these...

...a beenbag is far more stable but less versitile.

Well I had one chance and blew it! Here it is (on a steel post) in all it's blurry glory...(I had the camera set on Tv with a low shutter speed for an earlier shot, by the time I changed it, this guy was gone...)
