So I am a newb in this whole world of spey fishing.. going on my 2nd yr. I own a Echo TR 8 wt and have 2 skagit heads for the rod. both work awesome. But some of the rivers I fish have some great seams that I use to bobber and jig fish them with great success. So I have been tossin the idea around about getting the speydicator line just for these areas. I talked to a few different people on this site or speypages. So I decided to take the plunge and buy a speydicator 2 days ago. I bought the 9 wt one for a little extra wt. Some people have said that it can throw some tips. Which is good because i was looking for a multi style line. So today I went to the washougal for some casting/fishing.

The line works great for double speys and snake pokes. get the black sleev at the tip and it casts very well. So after a few different spots I took the thingamabobber off and put on a 10ft chunk of T17. ( went for broke on the heavy side of the sink tip side) pull the black sleeve to with in 3 feet of the reel and it cast fairly well. Not as easy as the 630 gr skagit head I have but well enuff that I will only need to take this one line for a day on the bank fishing. So all in all the line is just what I was looking for a line that can be used for nympthing and swinging. Next trip out I will try and use it for skatin a dry if I remember that is.

The funny thing is that I don't really feel bad for nympthing for steelhead not one bit.

So if you are thinking of getting a possible do all line give the speydicator a shot..

Locally in Nor Cal the Airflo Speydicator line is not real popular but we get orders for them online for Switch rod users on the Great Lakes tributaries for Steelhead.

Just curious what size reel you use for this line. I was talked into buying it for my 7wt switch but none of my regular reels will hold it. I ended up putting it on a Ross big game 6 which is over kill for a switch rod, and it just took it.

I have a 7 weight Speydicator line on a Galvan Torque 10 and it works but I do not have any room to spare. I could eliminate some backing which would help, if I remember because of the line size I went with 20lb backing.

After working with manufactures on switch rods lines, nothing compares with the Orvis Switch rod line for over head and spey casting. The 34' belly mends really well, turns over poly leaders and is the only line I'd recommend as a true switch rod fly line. They're sold already balanced to the weight of a switch rod so you can match a 7 weight switch rod with a 7 weight switch rod fly line and go fish. The 42' belly version should be available soon if not all ready. Put on a mono leader and dead drift or swing or use poly's for swinging....get a 10' floater, 3 ips, 6ips or the entire kit. Add 3-5 of mono with a perfection loop and start casting/fishing. Trust me.... this is "the" switch rod fly line. Use a (light, physical wieght) fly reel that is two sizes larger then the rod weight... 8 weight reel for a 6 weight switch rod. Check out my website www.jpflyfishing.com and click "speyzone" button, bottom of page and then click the "spey and switch rod line" button. Great luck, JP

How many yards (approximately) of backing do you have on the Torque 10? The reason that I ask is that I'm going to be in the market for a Torque and am torn between an 8 or a 10 for a 6110 switch. Initially, I'll likely go with Speydicator line since I'm fishing Great Lakes Tribs just as Bill mentioned, but may want to go with a Compact Skagit at a later point.

Suggestions anyone?

Jaybo,

The fly shop where I puchased the line put on the backing so I am not sure how much they installed. The Speydicator is a big line and if I remember correctly is 100 feet so I would go with the Torque 10. I have a Torgue 8 also and I don't think this line would have fit, unless you really cut back on the amount of backing. In fact when the line was put on the sales person asked me if I wanted to take off some backing. I decided to leave it along for now but it is snug on the reel.Hope this helps. I can send you a picture of the reel with line installed if that would help you.

NCL,

Thanks for your reply, that's kind of what I had been thinking about as well. I'd love to see a photo or two for reference. Who doesn't love gear porn! :unibrow: The 10 seems as though that's the way to go if I were going to opt for a Torque for backing capacity, but that is a large reel for a 6wt switch. I was just browsing on Galvan's website and am now considering a Rush LT. I own last year's Rush on a trout reel and they've made changes to it reminiscent of the OB series. The R8 actually holds more backing than the T8 and is the same weight. The beauty here is the drag is identical between the two, unless that's changed in the latest Rush offering. One thing's for sure, I am sold on Galvan reels. Super products, great people so I hear and love the fact that their products are US made!

Thanks again for your reply.

Jaybo,

I am not the greatest photographer but here are the pictures. Sorry the one is so dark, the pale yellow line is the backing. I also am a big fan of Galvan. That Rush sounds like it might be the way to go.

NCL,

Thanks for the photos, that's one great looking reel! I was poking around Kiene's shop and it looks as though either the R8 or T8 are the recommended reels with my rod. Hmmmm...decisions, decisions.

Jaybo,

That is a tough one. I had one other picture looking at the reel from the front and you could see the fullness of the spool but I lost it in the translation from desktop to post. This is a 7 weight line so your 6 weight may be slightly smaller. Good luck with the search and desision. If you think it will help I will try to get another, hopefully better, picture. You could probably cut back some on the backing and get the line on a T-8.
