Fall is a great time to catch the Stripers as they come into the bay from the ocean.

I use to fish this area with a friend many years ago (1970ish). It was around the Richmond/San Rafel Bridge. Local structure was 'Redrock' and the 'Sisters' which where rocky little islands that the fish indexed on when the tide was running strong.

My friend Cecil Wilder, a commercial painter from West Sacrament, would call the little tackle shop at Red Rock Marina to find out what day we should come and what time of day it would be best with the tides.

Cecil had a nice 15' Gregor aluminum boat which worked out to be the smallest boat out there.

We went down there to the marina and bought some lures, big bug eye lead headed red/white jigs. We launched right there and ran out into the bay early in the morning in October. Not many boats out yet but as the tide started to move boats came from all directions for the Striper action.

Even big cruisers....some boats where trolling and some, as we did, were casting to the ripes along the edge of those rocky little islands. The action was wild for an hour or two, then it slowed some and the boat mostly all went back to where they came from.

Our good friend John Quigly guides this area and it is good now so if you want to catch fresh in from the ocean Stripers on a fly you might book a day soon with John.
