Billy and I took his jet up the Feather a little way last night to check out the smallmouth. Water is up a bit, colder, and murkier, we think to help out the salmon coming up the system. Never the less we found some willing small fish on pole dancers and bubble heads. It's beautiful water full of sweeping sand bars and meandering logjams; perfect smallie territory. I imagine we'll be back at it fairly often as it is supposed to be prime all the way through October.

don't tell these little guys that the pole dancer is half their size

Last week it was lower (1,200 cfs) clearer and warmer so the Smallmouth fishing on top was better.

The flow now is 2,300, probably raised to induce the salmon to run up into the hatchery.

As soon as the flow goes down we will be back up there.

I think there are Smallmouth in the entire length of the Lower Feather River.

are you guys using the SM sage rod for the small pole dancers?

We were using the LMB size, the largest one, but it is still very light in the hand.

For this fishing only with the SMB size flies the SMB size Sage Bass outfit would work great.

What makes these rods perform so well is also the Sage Bass line that you get with it.

If you have a fast action #6 or #7 rod and go up two line sizes with a Bass or Saltwater line it will throw bigger bass bugs well.

Or just put on a Rio Outbound Short Coldwater floater the size the rod calls for because they are up two sizes already.

Or use the right weight Sage Bass line.

I think the Airheads and Pole Dancers in the smallest size are perfect for Smallmouth Bass in the AM and PM.

We are very lucky in Nor Cal to have so many streams, rivers and lakes to fish for warm water species.

Many believe that the Smallmouth bass in moving water is one of our finest gamefish. We have been working on finding some good places to fish for them, in moving water.

As soon as the flow comes down we will be back up on the Feather River around Marysville/Yuba City in the evenings.

We will also be running up from the mouth of the Feather too.
