Last week I got the chance to do something I'd wanted to to do for a very long time. Some friends from California River Adventures (http://www.calriver.com) invited me on a whitewater float and fish on the South Fork of the American. This was one of the most fun trout trips I've ever been on. We fished big buggers on sinking lines, stripped fast for predatory trout. The fish were all fat and strong as the water temps stay cool all summer long. The most amazing thing about the fishing is how clear the water is allowing anglers to watch fish chase all the way to the boat. This is some of the most visual streamer fishing which makes it that much cooler

The guides from Cal River were truly awesome on the oars through the Chili Bar run, maneuvering rapids and positioning the boat optimally for fishing. There's a lot of whitewater guides that moonlight in fishing but Robby and Scott truly are whitewater fishing guides.

All said we hooked 20 fish with 10 making it to the boat. They're adamant that the Middle Fork of the American has more, bigger, and meaner fish which is why they have set up some 2 day floats for prime time starting in September. For around $600 clients receive 2 days of guided whitewater and fishing along with 1 night of camping and meals which is pretty darn good. Cal River is fully licensed and bonded. Check out my blog for more details or get in touch with me at the shop if your interested in doing this sort of thing.

We all need to be fishing more 'streamers/buggers/leeches' deep for big trout in larger streams.

Every time I raft the forks of the American I wish I had a rod with me! Looks like a great time. Those are some nice browns, and yes the MF has some toads lurking in it.
