Finally got a chance to take the little one fishing this summer. Headed out to the part of the delta where we had some success last year. Battled the watersports crowd and launched the little boat. Hot weather and low tides to start off. No fish to be found. The high flows earlier in the year wiped out our first two go-to spots for panfish. Nothing to do but eat our snacks and hang out while we wait for the tide to turn. Cruised around for a bit and found an exposed beach. Too good to pass up. Beached the boat and jumped off. To our surprise, this beach was loaded with clams. Had fun digging these little suckers up.

The tide started to swing and started to flood the beach. We buried the clams back in the sand and off we went. He didn’t want any help with the set-up so I handed him the 3wt and off he went ‘roll-casting’ away. He hooked some weeds, the boat rail, fish finder, fire extinguisher, rope, motor, my back, his pants….pretty much everything but the fish. The whole time I just keep casting away looking for some fish. Finally, a tiny gill took pity on us and he got to reel it in:

A couple more bluegills and that was it. No big concentrations. Off to the next spot. It looked more promising as the water kept rising. So I put my rod down and ‘guided’ him.
‘Make a roll cast there next to the tullies.’ ‘OK’….
New –age roll cast: Slap the water with the rod tip to attract the fish and make a tight ‘S’ loop. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh134/mar224177/DSCN0437b.jpg

Missed the target by 4 feet but the bluegill didn’t care. Hooked up:

Pretty stoked to catch the fish all by himself but not even a thank you to his guide. Oh well.

I sneaked in a few casts with the popper and got a few :

‘Till the next adventure.

That is awesome!!! Gill's are my favorite fish to catch, didn't use to be but now that I am older and wiser they are my all time favorite.

Priceless photos and memories. I took my neighbors 10 year old fishing last year. He's hooked, ask me to go fishing all the time. His dad hates fishing, so I guess I'll have to take him to see those big smiles on his face. Just like your son's. Enjoy all your reports.
