Im in La Crosse, WI. On the mississippi. I got out for a couple hours with a rod headed for some bass water. On the way, I saw some Alligator Gar and couldnt resist throwing a fly to them. I started with my floating dragonfly nymph. They were all over it. Ruined it. Then bit it off. I thru other flies at them. There wasnt a pattern they wouldnt bite. However, getting a hook set in that boney jaw was near impossible. I landed 4 of these beasts out of 30-40 bites. These guys were dumb as a box of rocks. And poor vision. Had to have the fly right in front of them to get their attention.

maybe someday I'll catch a REAL fish in Wisconsin. I'll have fun with the garbage til I do.

Those things remind me of Needlefish. And, to think that I used to swim with 'em in some backwater sloughs when I was a kid down in Mississippi. Yikes!!!!

Jay, is that swept concrete?

Are you catching one of my bucket list species from someones patio?

You seem to have a knack for catching the really odd species there. Sure, anybody can do Smallies and Pike, you hit Wis. and come up with Dogfish and Gar right off the bat. It's only a matter of time before you post a pic of a fly caught snapping turtle.

Good on ya brother, keep it up.

Lol! I know right?! Some crazy fishes out here. I caught it from a man made levy. This was a small remnant of concrete on an earthen levy

It turns out, these are long nosed gar.

Try this next time you want more gar: Take a short piece of yellow nylon rope and fray the end. Attach that as your "fly"...their teeth get stuck in the stuff! Pretty easy to release though.

You're not making me miss the great trout fishing there yet....

Right on Moravia. When I lived in Texas we would take a hook and cut the bend off. Place a bead and slide to the eye, add a propeller, and another bead. Tie in a piece of nylon cord (the type for laying out forms and foundation, also comes in interesting colors now) and separate. Gar fly! Oh, and you might want to take a piece of dowel to insert in the gar's mouth so you can unravel the nylon.

Good tips guys! I like the dowel idea. Those things will lay perfectly still, then, without any warning, they thrash like a tightly coiled spring. Pretty scary with that rack of chompers!

I dont plan on looking for these fish again, but if I stumble on them, I may be better prepaired.
