I've been fishing for over 40 years and top water bass fishing is hands down my favorite. The hunting aspect is whats so intoxicating. Running the boat along the edges and tossing big bugs like darts into the holes is a blast....literally. My focus becomes so intense on the target everything else go's away. I usually push along at a slow walking speed so my retrieves are very short targeting the reaction bite. Strip, strip..strip....strip, cast strip, strip...strip cast fishing like this for several 100 yards is common. This pace is fast and the action can be freakish. I was trying to explain to my buddy the focus and pace and he said yea like dry fly trout fishing.....NOT, I cast to and cover more fish holding area's in 10 minutes then a trout guy does in a hour or more. Run and gun baby. Last night I fished till 11:30 had the pond all to myself, this am the action was great as well. We are blessed with the Delta.

Mar,

No weed guards on my first batch, I'll tie some in on my next run. I like high water rock wall's for this fly but it get hammered in the cheese as well. All my PDKO's perform a little different but this particular unit zigged and zagged beautifully.

Gregg you said it well. I have worked hard at letting people know and become aware of the unique and incredible Bass fishery the Delta offers the flyangler. I feel i had a big part in bringing it into focus. Your post makes me feel all warm and fuzzy:-) It is surely a worldclass fishery and the topwater opportunities it allows would be hard to beat anywhere in the world. That doesn't mean it is a "no brainer", in fact it requires commitment and a thorough understanding of the environment to have consistency. I applaud your commitment!

The shallow water habitat and tidal influence make this fishery possible and certainly one of the best and unique in the world for flyfishers willing to pursue the topwater game. I hope more anglers will see the light and embrace it as you have. The fun factor and the attention it requires can settle the mind. As one of my clients said:..this is like a video game! That statement about sums it up.

For those that can't see past their noses and look beyond the next striper at this time of year all i can say is they are missing out on an incredible fishery and missing opportunity to grow their knowledge base of the Delta. i have said to many...it is a game that keeps on giving and the better you get at your presentations the more game you get to play....it's endless.

For those that have embraced the LmBass fishery and have found the joys it provides and are commited to learning the intricacies of the topwater game out there, i congratulate you. You are my heros! Keep at it!

Nice job Gregg!

KD,

Gregg has been killing it hard this summer. It is killing me to be in Santa Cruz all summer working. I guess all that teaching you have done with him has started to rub off. Only problem is now I'm not going to be able to get him the stop fishing topwater in the Tournament.

Nice job Cappy.

See you next week.

Thanks for the kind word's KD I hope your well. If it wasn't for you I would have never discovered the incredible fly fishing opportunities we have right here in our back yard. Its hard to explain the feeling I get after a trip on the Delta you have introduced it to me and I'm very grateful.......(My wife not so much. A bass boat and all the gear that go's with it.) You have always been there for the FF community to openly help others both at the bench and on the water. You and your team have done a great job introducing this area to the fishing community and teaching us the challenges it faces. I encourage all of you to book a day or two with Capt.Doran he is a inspiration and a gentleman. http://www.deltaadventures.com/

Gregg....your inspiration is commendable but as you know with someone of your skill set it doesn't take much. I gave you just a taste and you ran with it. Unfortunately, i am not guiding at this time due to severe mobility issues.
I hope i didn"t make it sound as if i am. Capt. Marc Brown has taken over Delta Adventures and he is doing a good job maintaining the standards i set forth for the business. I talk to him regularly and help him out when he asks.

Gregg you are a standup guy when it comes to our fisheries and when the hat is passed around you have certainly stepped up to the plate. I appreciate your passion and hope to see more of your adventures. Posts like yours helps to keep me in the game!

You and Matt are a killer team and i hope to see you guys at the next Bass-n-Fly!

Take care.
