Went back to "the ditch" armed with a flyrod and some damsel nymphs. I caught one right away. Then they got smart. The water visibility was about 3". Started sight casting to fish and caught 2 more.
Kinda fun hooking them in shallow water and watch them explode. Can see why theyre called golden bones. Cant believe how friggin humid it is here! I was drenched in a half hour and sweated off all my bug spray in about 45 minutes.

Very nice j! Yes the humidity will take some getting used to. See any fire flies there?? Miss them fellas. Way to get out after the local goldens. They can be entertaining, wait till you get into a real big boy with a lot of line out.

Another day another species. I have no idea what this thing is. I was casting to carp in muddy water, got a bite and then this thing started jumping and puting up a great fight. Felt like the amazon for a minute. Maybe a snakehead or a bowfin??

Holy crap Jay, I haven't seen a Bowfin in, well, I'm not going to say. In Momence Il. we called them Dogfish, and they were known for putting up a great fight. A big one will make you wish for the 8wt.

Don't know why they were called Dogfish and considered trash. It was said they were too bony to eat and since that was Backwater USA back then, if you couldn't eat it, it was trash.

Have you picked up any rumors of Smallmouth in your area yet?

I started my day on the Wisconsin river, about 30 minutes from home. Got a hot tip that it was loaded with smallies, pike, muskie, etc... but I struck out. So I found this new carp ditch. Was very surprised this big nasty, toothy thing took my damsel nymph.

WOW!!!! Nice catch. :D I can understand why people chose not to eat the Bowfin.... If you look closely at the nose of it, there appears to be a parasite crawling out of one side.

Darian, I thought that too, but it turns out to be a little fleshy extention of the nostril. I posted this on my facebook wall and one of my friends ID'd as a Tarp, a cross between a trout and a carp. LOL
