Heading to the Kenai for a couple of days in July (15/16). Looking at a day of trout fishing on the upper refuge section and have one day open (Reds? Trout?). Any suggestions on water/gear/flies/guides?

Thanks!

Nevermind. Found another thread asking the same question! Thanks.

Glad you found another thread. I'll respond anyways, just because I can.

You will be there during the statistical peak of the Kenai Kings and 2nd run of reds (sockeye). there are lots of options, depending on what you want. If you want trout in "smaller" waters, try the Russian River or Quartz creek. Bring both nymphs and beads. I've done fine on the standards (pheasant tails, hare's ear, etc). Some swear by indicators, but I've done well without them. You can always fish the mouth of the Russian as it enters the Kenai (the sanctuary) for trout, though lots of people will be there for the salmon. and if you like hiking, hike up to Crescent lake and fly fish for big grayling!! Elk Hair Caddis is the deal there. YOu can catch smaller fish every cast at the outlet, or go for bigger fish in the lake itself.

Good luck!
