Dry Flies with a near realistic action of a struggling insect is possible
by the addition of an easily cut down version of size 1 action disc's sold
in tackle shops. These action disc's are honed down to 3/16" to 5/16"
diameter with a sharp scraping razor while stem is snug chucked in a drill press.

The cut down action disc and beads are near bouyant with a density slightly
higher than water. The action disc's and beads slide freely on the tippet.

Upstream casts are not inhibited and separation of beads and disc from fly
can be expected which supports drifting of the fly until.....

....until the fly begins to drag the fly line downstream. At this time the
disc and beads quickly slide back to the fly and the simulated bug action begins.

The fly can be roll cast to any area of the stream that has a current velocity
sufficient to generate disc action. Disc action can be generated by retrieval
on still water surfaces too but not necessary on flowing water.

The cut down diameter of these discs determines how much action for a given stream
current. Stem length also determines degree of action. I tend to cut the stems quite
short to inhibit disc visibility by the trout. Disc and beads are translucent
but do not blend perfectly with clean water.

Many tests conducted on 3 different velocities of river current to arrive at
optimum diameters. River currents were normal walk, fast walk, and jog. The
faster the water....the smaller the disc diameter. Full size discs are much
too large for dry flies. Longer stem lengths and less beads provide far more
action. Too much in fact to be realistic for a bug.

Further testing and trials by others are needed. River currents are too fast
right now at my location. 2 photo's, finished fly's & pictorial diagram.

Had to use a VERY HIGH contrast to bring out the action disc modification. Hopefully the fish will have a hard time seeing it too.
