My friend found this in his house, what the heck is it. An insect with 8 legs? About 1 inch long.

Solifugid. Not sure which one, they're pretty diverse.

Yep, wind scorpion/spider is the common name. Seen a few here and there. I think they're mostly harmless but they do have a set of mandibles on them but no venom.

Sunspider, windscorpion. I LOVE those. Not an insect though. It's an arachnid. Keep him for me, I had one for more than a year once. The way they eat crickets is wicked!!

I knew arachnid SHig would know. So why is it called a windscorpion? Do tell

They're the world's fastest "spider". I guess they "run like the wind"? They actually are closer relatives to scorpions however.

They spin webs which act as sails and blow with the wind. Upon landing on a person they make one small bite behind the ear.

3 seconds later you're dead.

At least that's what I'm gonna tell my grandson next time he's out.

Look what I got last night! OMG it's gotta be the biggest ant I've ever seen, and it was in my bathtub. Of course you never just have ONE ant right!?

Imagine the happy trout if there were to be a "hatch" of these?

You guys ever see those HUGE spiders that spin webs between
the metal barriers on top of the Goethe footbridge?

Those things are nasty looking...I've walked through their webs downstream. Makes my skin crawl.

Hey Shig,

YES! Those things are huge! Nasty.

They've sure got a good gig hanging on that bridge and
eating anything that comes through.

SHig is born as a different spider every other lifetime. Didn't you know?

Shig,

That's a carpenter ant if you didn't already know. They're worse than termites for destroying wood and it doesn't have to be contacting the ground. We had them at our cabin and cost me a bundle to get rid of them and repair the damage.

Yikes! Where should I look for them? Maybe some WD-40 and a zippo?

The bad news is, if you have one carpenter ant, you have more around.
The good news is, they get wings in a couple weeks up here.
Trout really love 'em. Start tying now.....
On a low flow year fishing them dry is good. This year, tye them to drown (heavy).
