Aloha, went ono fishing yesterday. Got two nice ones, 37 and 52lbs. Had a big cuda hit a skirt and I didn't even gaff it, just threw it in the box. My friend wanted to get the skirt back in the water and I went to get the trail hook out of the cuda's mouth. Only using my leather man I tried to avoid the teeth, but when I grabbed the hook the fish jumped and put the first hook in my hand. I tried to push the barb through, but the hook was pretty big. I was afraid I might have nicked the artery by my thumb and decided to just head in and go to the emergency room.

The doctor got out the bolt cutters and we got the hook out. The eye of the hook flew across the room.

This is me before my new favorite drug, delodin! It could have been a lot worse, only good place for a dangerous fish is in the box. Now I just need to avoid infection, so no fishing for a while, Mems.

HOLY CRAP DON!!
I hope they gave you lots of the good stuff!!That is every fishermans worst nightmare times ten with that huge hook.I hope everthing came out alright that looks pretty serious. Big hooks and big fish are dangerous stuff and that happens so fast.
Hope it heals fast

Jeez Louise Don!

I think I'll stick with trout hooks.

At least you don't need bolt cutters to get 'em out.

Best wishes Bud. And thanks for the warning on the big fish. Looks like they mean business.

Damn!!!! That thing looks more like a gaff hook than a trailer.... With that rank a barb, you made the right choice to go see the doc.... Hope you get back to fishin' soon....

BTW, nice pair of Ono. That should make up for some of this....

Thanks for the comments guys. The hand is doing better, funny how bad I am at using my left hand. Toothbrush, shaving, all tough, but not as bad as wipping my ass! I will get a longer pair of pliers and throw the fish into the box from now on. Funny how stupid things just happen. I should be back on the water in a week or so. Thanks for the well wishes, Don.

OMG Don- don't you know we have a trip to do next week? I better buy a pair of bolt cutters to keep on the boat just in case, for that 8/0 shrimp pattern you wanted to throw! Get well soon & hope no infection sets in. Hope to see you next week. Aloha, chet

LOL! I also found the "wipe" to be the most frustrating thing when I ripped my right thumb with a skil saw.

Wow Mems,

What a sight. A few years back, we had a guy put a hook right through the top of his ear.
Took him into Los Planes to have it removed. The doctor tried a pair of cutters but that didn't work then out came the bolt cutters. But first he deadend the ear so the guy wouldn't pass out. I've pulled out many hooks but nothing like the one you planted in your hand.
Hopefully no one will bury a fly this year.
Nice weather, some roosters, jack and dorado. Bait is plentiful and conditions are getting better every day. Hopefully the season will be a fast and furious one

Take care of that hand

Jay
