I'm looking for a lower elevation lake to camp at the week prior to Easter where my grandsons can have some success. They're really busting me to go fishing and my favorite spots in the 4500 and higher elevations are not likely to be open then, for camping. I've thought about Amador with it's Donaldson strain fish, but have not been impressed with what I've heard about the campgrounds there. Pardee comes to mind but I don't think my Scadden pontoons will be allowed as you can't have your body parts in the water there. Anyone confirm this?
Due to gas prices, I'd like to keep within about 200 miles of home, ruling out most areas north of Sac or the east side. Any suggestions?

No contact at Pardee. What about Camanche? South shore has a trout pond, lots of fly guys float there.
Nice camping facility. Plus it's less than 10 miles from Amador for a day trip.

Slage,
Good thought. I've fished the South Pond once in a tube. Didn't think aboutthe camping there and the proximity to Amador. Will haveto check it.

You can float Pardee which they allow as long as you have waders on. The fishing has been really good off rainbow point stripping woollies on an I line.

I spoke to the EBMUD Inspector and he confirmed float tubes and 'toons are ok, with waders. Now to find some for the boys. I'm leaning towards Pardee or Camanche, looks like nice camping and I've heard a lot of horror stories of Amador "combat fishing". Got enough of that years ago.
Pardee also has WW species which just might liven it up for the boys if the trout are slow.
I'll be there mid-week, so it may be worth a drive to Amador for a day trip.

My vote is for Pardee. Took my 2 1/2 year old son there last week and lost count of the number of planter he got to reel in. They are planting every other tuesday now. Camping is very good there and more senic than camanche IMO. A big plus for me would be the smallmouth. They grow huge in pardee and the last and next record will come from there. Best time for the big boys is March to May.
