If you want to get a Spey or Switch rod for Steelhead, Shad and Stripers it's time to get off the couch and get going.

Steelhead:

Right now is the end of the winter-run of steelhead and the spring-run is starting.

The spring run is March through May with fresh run wild fish running 4 to 6 pounds along with nice fresh Half-pounders running 12 to 16 inches.

Stripers:

They will usually enter the lower reaches below Watt Avenue in April/May.

'Striper Commando' Andy Guibord and others will be attacking them with two-handed rods while wading.

American Shad:

They will come in to spawn with the Stripers in April, getting better in may and peaking in June. A Switch rod is killer for Shad in the Lower American River.
