View Full Version : First Mackinaw at Jenkinson Lake

After looking at the weather forcast for the day, i could see that it would be a good day to go fishing for Macks at Jenkinson Lake. I hook up the boat, and picked up my friend Jim H. and drove up the hill. When we got to the lake there was 2ft. of snow on the ground, overhead clouds, and a light wind. We started cruising around the lake watching the fish finder untill we found some fish shallow enough (45ft.) to fly fish. I used a 8 wt. with lead core shooting head, 5 ft. of leader, and a black wiggle tail with a foam head. I got one grab, and one mack in 3 hours of fishing.

Very nice! Not easy to fish a set up like that in deep water and detect a strike. Well done

Great Gene

Not too many people have caught a Mackinaw (Lake Trout) on a fly rod.

I guess they are in the Char family and good eating too.

That's awesome! I was going to try to get up there last weekend, but chickended out with all of the snow. Congratulations.

I used my penis tape measure to measure that fish, and it said 22 inches.....hahahaha

C'mon Gene,.... With that cold weather what you think is 22" is really MUCH shorter.... :nod: You know, the shrinkage principle.... :p :lol:

BTW, congrats on the the catch. It's a beauty.... :nod:

Yey Jim Holmes is right.....that was a little fellow....these mackinaws can get over 10lbs in Jenkinson Lake....there's a store/bar across from the main gate that has some pictures, and some very big macks hanging on the wall.
