Headed out to Stinson Beach last Sunday with Mark and his friend Eaton looking for some fun in the sun and surf. Got in the water at Stinson Beach around 10, I turned around and actually saw a little bit of snow on the hills right next to us.That was definitely a first for me to see snow next to the ocean like that. It was only a matter of minutes before I was into my first really nice barred perch. Caught a couple more throughout the day with a lot of walking. The recent storms really changed the beach and took away alot of structure so it was cast all the way down beach til you found fish. 4 weekends in a row fishing the surf, I think I might have a problem, last weekend I got skunked but Mark caught a bunch of redtails and 3 striper's with the biggest going 33 inches. I had to leave early that day and of course about 15 minutes after I left is when he got into the fish. Oh well I still had fun and can't wait to get back in the surf. At the end of last Sunday I caught at first what I thought was a leaf but it turned out to be a super tiny halibut that was fair caught. It actually hit the fly and got hooked in the lower jaw, he barely fit in my hand but I can add another fish caught on the fly to my list.

Glad you guys did better than I did. Got one tap! Only one little piece of structure where a creek cut into the beach but apparently sterile! Everything else was just plain ole flat. Of course you are a long way from Morro Bay. Feeling a little snake bit right now.

Good going Scott

That little "flat fish" is what I have impaled on a spear in my avatar photo here.

We called them a "Sand Dab".......

For someone who has never caught perch before, what type flys were you using?

Mark calls them trout flies. Check my post from a week or so back titled "The beach keeps calling me and I keep answering" I posted a pic of the flies that we use, they were tied by Mark.

Interesting perch flies. The middle one would be a good choice for caddis on the lower Sac...

Gene:
Down here on our San Diego beaches, we will see the halibut move in toward shore in the next month or so. I believe that they are spring spawners. They also like to come in and feed on the perch babies about to be dropped as well as the grunion. Our grunion runs
will start in early April. Not all that unusual to see football-sized halibut jumping out
of the water chasing something. Probably not a good time to be a baby perch!
Best,
