Was with a guy yesterday who landed his first adult as well....
We had another on that snapped off.
Both these were nymphing.
There's fish in the river!

Thanks Jed
This is the time of year we have more Steelhead in the Lower American River that are between 5 to 10 pounds and larger.
Fish near 20 pounds have been landed on the Lower American River.
It is not easy or that consistent but it is close for those who live in these parts.
There are winter Steelhead in many rivers in Nor Cal, OR and WA now and the fishing is off and on for many reasons.
Winter Steelheading is not for everyone, thanks God......
If you want to catch one go with a guide once and a while or just go a lot.
In the Spring (March/April/May) we will have lots of smaller Steelhead in the Valley rivers that are feeding and they will be easier to catch for most of us.

I've been out several times without a bump...due to either not enough time put in, lack of luck, or becasue I just don't know what the hell I'm doing. I am gaining some much needed experience with my new switch rod.
If someone wants to take pity and PM me even some general advice on location, flies, depth you will gain a significant karmic benefit.

Andy Guibord is taking people out now for very affordable rates to fish with him on the Lower American River in his super cool drift boat.
I can guarranty you that spending a day with Andy would get you closer to doing more things right and less things wrong.
He is using Spey and Switch rods but will also teach indicator fishing as well.

Looks like a fresh batch of smaller steelhead (20"-26")have moved into the system. Been seein more bright chrome caught lately, these are not the bluebacks tho. Stopped by Sailor bar the way home from work and some baitchuckers had two 20"plus dime bright on a stringer. They also said they caught a 13 TO 14LB. wild fish that they released.
