A week and a half removed from my first attempt at flinging a fly in the surf, I can't wait to get back! The trip didn't produce any fish, but was very educational. I was humbled by the water. Didn't swim, or break anything, so I'm counting it a success. Thanks to all who helped here.
Looking at my planner, I'm looking to be in the Fort Bragg area in a couple weeks, has anyone had surf-luck in the area? Then, the 19th of Feb, I will be in Long Beach for a cheer competition.....I'm DEFINATELY going to need to throw a few flies at the salt after that!!! Any help, or company, would be appreciated

The Fort Bragg area can be outstanding fishing from the surf or the rocks. However, there're areas there that have recently been designated MPA's, etc., and may be closed to fishing. Check the F&G regs for that area before fishing. That said, one more caution, At this time of year, The north coast surf can be dangerous. Large swells and rogue waves, etc. If you're not familiar with heavy surf conditions, I wouldn't try it. If you still decide to fish the surf, don't take your eyes off the waves and don't wade any deeper than you calves....
OK, there's plenty to learn about and places to fish up there. I'd recommend going by a bookstore in Mendocino called Bookwinkles and pick up a copy of, Mendocino County Coastal Fishing & Diving Access Guide. It's little more than a pamphlet but contains a bunch of valuable information about fishing, overall, in that area.
For the Long Beach area check out the following websites:

Good luck.... :D :D

D, thanks for the heads-up on the water. I think we all need to be constantly reminded of our limits. I prefer to hear it, than have Mother Nature put me in my place. I understand the "over your head" thing, I rode bulls for four years. I'm not looking to defy any laws anytime soon. I'm in this for the line-tightening, rod-bending magic that's out there. I don't think I have to risk everything to get it. When would be the opportune time to fish the Northern coastal waters?

There are fish in the surf zone year round. Actually, Spring is good but the surf's still running large at that time of year. Summer is a bit more calm and fall is flat. However, most of the structure required for attracting fish in the surf is built up over the winter and spring. In general, if there isn't any structure, fish are not concentrated in any area. As in SoCal and elsewhere, it's advantageous to visit the area you want to fish at low or minus tide levels to locate features like channels/holes to visit later. :)
Good fishing in rocky areas is more dependent on tidal movement. High tides being best. Rocky areas can be very dangerous if you happen to be way out on one when a large wave set goes thru. If you've never done that, I wouldn't attempt it unless accompanied by someone who has. Amazing fishing if you catch it right.... :D

This thread got my surf appetite up.... In addition to the pamphlet that I mentioned earlier, I'd recommend reading Ken Hanleys, Fly Fishing the Pacific Inshore. Covers all inshore surf zones environments. Good read. Lots of photo's illustrating what to look for and what to expect in the way of catches. One area which I forgot to mention and that's included in Kens Book is Estuaries. They're my favorite water for Salmon/Steelhead on the fly. If you fish any estuaries (large or small), be sure to check F&G regs as many are heavily regulated now. :D

Wa-hoo! I love this sport for that simple fact. Something as little as a word can stir a frenzy in my mind only answered by wetting a line! For example, when I hear Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Life By The Drop", I can't help but envision my self on a river fishing! Usually, it won't be long, and I'm back on the water.
I have recently read Ken's "Fishing Afoot in the Surf Zone", now I have another few to read, thanks. I'm also planning on attending he and JM's seminar this spring.
Now, it's like what the monkey said after cutting off half of his tail......"it won't be long now"

Wow, if you think it, it will come!
I have a newly planned trip back to Morro on Mon after Super Bowl. 2nd trip should be better than the first, right?
Wa-Hoo!!
