Drove up to the Russian yesterday. The River was a little over 900cfs and very fishable. Stopped at Dry Creek. There was a report of one fish. I worked it over for about two hours. Nothing. The river had blown out the downstream area where I usually cross. Unable to even attempt a crossing. The same with the upstream crossing at Dry Creek. Drove over to Wohler Bridge and fished for 3 more hours. Nothing happening. Even the drift boaters were asking if there was any action. It was a good day with lots of sun. Left around 3:30 for the drive home.

If the river gets low and clear I think that February can be good.

From talking with the local 'commandos' I think it is very different fishing in slow water in very definite holding slots.

Lots of people go over there and don't do well because it is a different type of fishing than most up river steelheaders are use to.

I am lucky because if I went I could probably fish with one of the locals I know who has fished it for many years.

Doesn't mean that I would catch anything though....

Jeff Putnam has fished the Russian River from time to time and said the fish are pretty hot, hatchery and wild, because they are fairly close to the ocean.
