View Full Version : Saltwater Reels?
Any recommendations on saltwater reels? Looking for something:
1. Dependable
2. Affordable
This would mainly be used for Mexico type fishing. Less likely Tarpon/flats.
Thanks.

Well,.... You're certainly going to get a bunch of different recommendations on this subject....
I've been using Redington Brakewaters and CDL's in sizes 9/10 and 11/12. They're large arbor and have cork drag systems (the CDL has a combo of cork and synthetic drag). The 9/10 reels load about 250 plus yards of 30# dacron backing plus the fly line and the 11/12, more. They've been dependable with minimal maintenance. Redington reels are affordable (in the $250.00 - $275.00 range). These reels have been used in Mexico at Las Arenas for the last five years on all of the usual suspects.
These reels have been discontinued but a new, improved model but I can't recall the name.... :D

Katz,
I've been using a Galvan T-10 although it could be out of your price range. The other reel that I really like is the TFO 425. This reel can definitely has the line capacity. I have at least 295+ yards of 30lb dacron salt water backing and 200' of 30# clear amnesia plus a 30' LC-13. Remember, I'm using a shooting head system. The reel is around 299.00. I would check out the TFO web site. Ya want a reel with a good drag system for the critters in baja.
Just my opinion, like Darian said you're going to get a lot of different responses
