Yuba/Englebright Picts from Sunday 12/19. Accesses at Hammon Grove and Sycamore Ranch were closed. The Englebright release was showing around 18,000 cfs. Lots of logs and debris in the river. Last pictures are of Deer Creek which runs into the Yuba downstream of the dam.

in the bridge picture you can see a rainbow taking a tiny mayfly. Hope this weather allows us to fish again!

I'm guessing flows at these levels won't cause scouring? Does anyone remember what the flows were when the Yuba was scoured back in 05/06? Boy, that really did a number on the fishing for a few years. Just hoping we don't see flows at those level for a long time. What level of flows on the Yuba start to cause scouring? 40k+?

Merry Christmas everyone and tight lines

Don't quote me on this, but weren't the bad flows back then 200K+?

When it was really scoured was the winter of 96-97. Completely changed the river. Completely changed the N. Yuba that winter too.

Whoa?? 200k?? I didn't think it was that high in 05/06, but that's an amazing number. Hopefully she comes into form for early January. I live for the BWO - Skwala season. It's my favorite time to be on the Yuba.

the river was measured at 150,000 cfs 1997 but I also heard that that was the max the gauge would read so it must have been higher. I saw 15 foot standing waves under the old bridge on the max day. I think 04 was a little over 50,000cfs and it did move a little gravel around, thats when it starts. 1986 was a big year at 75,000 or so cfs and there was only caddis for a couple years.

I would appreciate being pointed to some pictures of the Lower Yuba taken in January 1997.

I vaguely recall seeing some posted on this website in year's past, specifically of the water flowing under the SR20 bridge...

As an aside, I recall the shad fishing on the Lower Yuba later that 1997 was pretty darn good....

Thanks.

The MF @ Our House near the peak flow of 9,500 cfs late Sunday. The roar echoing in the canyon was the best part.

Ralph,

Where is the dam in the pic? Thought I knew lots of the river, but don't recongnize that.

Take Care,

Thanks for pointing me to some pics from January 1997. I recall some other shots, specifically taken at the water roaring under the SR 20 bridge.... it kind of had that miniature effect similar to those old "Godzilla" movies.....

Hi Jimmie-
It's the only dam on the MF between Englebrite and Milton. It diverts water through a tunnel to Cabin Creek then on to Colgate. If (when) we can get fish around, over or through Engelbrite this will be the only barrier to a steelhead run of over 40 miles. Great site for a fish ladder. Perfect habitat. Imagine! And we're working on making it a reality.

This would truly be a wonderful thing to have happen..... I would just love to be able to show my kids at least one trib to the Sacramento where salmon or steelhead access their once ancestral spawning grounds......

In addition, how awesome it would be to have a similar side channel of some sort that bypassed Nimbus and Folsom and allowed salmon and steelhead to climb to Tahoe!

I visited the hatchery at the headwaters of the Salmon River in the Sawtooths in Idaho. I saw salmon that made the journey from the mouth of the Columbia River, into the Snake, then the Salmon, and on to the hatchery that, if I'm not mistaken, are some 1,200 miles of waterway...... It was inspirational to say the least....

A few years ago I came across wild salmon while fishing the upper reachs of the Lochsa River in Idaho near Powell. this is just west of Lolo Pass and the Montana Border (Lewis and Clark came through there) I was in awe of the fact that this fish must have traveled some 1200 miles plus to get to that spot. It is indeed an amazing thing!!

The flows of 05/06 got up to 110k. I know this because my dad and I used to fish the Yuba about 3 times a week (i missed a lot of school) for the previous couple of years and this water pretty much stopped our Yuba excursions. Here are some photos I took at its peak in 05/06.

Thanks Ben for sharing those terrific pictures of the Yuba River and going out there to take the pictures in the first place.

I'm not entirely lazy as I did take a drive to the end of Hallwood Ave. during the spring of 2006 to see for myself. The water was right below the end of the road...... And where I typically would wade to fish for shad was buried under rapids.... awesome.

2006 was certainly a very high water year on the Yuba and Feather Rivers.....
