I headed out to Elko NV, Ruby Mountains last weekend for some Fly Fishing. Total trip was less than 1,000 miles, not to bad. I meet my brother who drove out from Park City. We figured it was the half way point.
Only fished for one day and it was worth it! I made it to Elko Friday afternoon and hooked up with Joe, the owner of Elko Fly Shop. He led me in the right direction and I picked up some flies he suggested. Excellent Gent.
We started on the So Fork River down from the So Fork Reservoir. 20 min dirt road to the river, 4X4 was needed at some of the river crossings. It’s A beautiful high desert river that produced some healthy and strong Rainbows. Nymphing was very productive and the fish were not leader shy. I started off with my new TFO 3# 8’6’ Pro, I thought the rod was going to be to light after my brother landed his first 3lb bow, but it turned out to be the perfect choice. Also there are several places to camp right on the river. We were the only ones on the river.
For the afternoon fish we headed up Laramie Canyon and caught several Bows and very strong Brookies, 14” was the biggest. All on Dry flies.
We will head back for a 3 day fish next year, can’t wait.

Nice looking photos. Haven't been out to Elko in a long time, but when I was there the fishing was great! Glad to hear you got some fish on your new rod. I'm looking at a 6wt TFO Pro. for bigger rivers and lakes.

Wow looks like a great trip, I have heard alot of great things about the Ruby Mountains. Kind of one of those forgotten places that no one I ever mention it too even knows it exists. Special place great for backpacking as well. I haven't been but know a very salty backpacker that says its his number one place too go. Nice report.

No reason to go there. It's ugly and totally devoid of fish. That trip must have been an anomaly. Just wipe it from your memory.

Repeat after me: There's no such place as the Ruby Mountains.....There's no such place as the Ruby Mountains.....

Whew! Dodged a bullet there.

Way to dirty up the Benz on a test drive. Did the salesman accompany you? ;)

I would have expected some crushed tail pipes based on the one picture. Careful tire placement, traction and the right amount of throttle can get it done!

I think you meant Lamoille Canyon...one of the prettiest places out there!

LOL! If there was a salesman on that trip we never would have fished! It’s just me, who loves to take Mercedes-Benz SUV on and off road. With the short wheel base, 3 types of traction control, and ground clearance, the GLK350 is the real deal! The whole under carriage is protected from rocks and brush. Best part, both air intakes are right under the hood, this boy can take water, and I did it!
My apologies on the Canyon, its Lamoille Canyon, thanks RFT.
From what the locals told me, spring is the best time to hit the South Fork, although I was very impressed with the fishing we had.
We are talking about a spring trip with the RV and Camping by the river, should be great!

The Ruby's are awesome! I have to tip by hat to you for what is unmistakably the best hybrid of an awesome report with the best stealth car ad ever created. As a former General Manager of a Chevy dealership, I used to freak out that my crew was taking their demo cars in places like this, especially since I worried they'd see my own Tahoe out there when they arrived!

I know how anglers like to talk in hush-hush tones about the angling in the Ruby Mt. area near Elko. It is similar to heli-skiers who have been venturing there for 25-30 years. The difference being is that the skiing is very costly.
