Put in the kayak at the Howe Ave. access on Saturday for the Salmon opener.
It was my first time to launch there, broke my A/R parking pass in.
Paddled to the pumps and tried to get the sinking line down where the fish were.
Ended up paddling up and down that section dredging the deeper looking water for no salmon action but great workout.
Beautiful typical day for a salmon chase, drizzling rain, gray low clouds.
some pics:
1) Howe ave.
2) gnarly snarly
3) barely illegal striper

Kayaks, pontoon boats, small boats, rafts and canoes all work well on the Lower American River because it is 90% flat, slow moving water as you can see from all the photos.

There are only two major "rapids" so it is pretty safe out there.

I would always wear a PFD because it is big enough to drown in though....

I believe the river is at 2,000 cfs which is my favorite flow for wading.
