Since moving up to Eureka from Sacramento a few months ago, been itching to get to the Trinity. Well, Saturday was the day. No rain, river looked good, but very clear. Scouted a good looking stretch between Salyer and Del Loma, about a 1/2 mile of wadeable, perfect steelhead water with riffles, pools, tailouts, deep runs, you name it. Never saw another fisherman, to my great suprise.

As for the fishing......well, if I would've brought along the 3wt, I would've had a freaking field-day! There are tons of 7-11" smolts in the river, at least where I was anyway. Just about every cast, I'd get a grab from a smolt. So, needless to say, I had to tie on a much bigger fly. Black bunny leech looked pretty darn juicy in that clear water. But, no grabs from any bigger fish, not even any halfpounders. I'll bring the 3wt and some EHC's next time, along with the 7wt.

P.S......If there's anyone up here on the north coast that wants to show me around up here, I'd be very grateful.

No rain on Saturday? I was deer hunting on South Fork Mountain Saturday not too far from where you were fishing and it flat ass poured all night Friday and rained pretty well most of Saturday, with winds of 40 mph or so.........

Fished only one day last week, Thursday evening. Rain threatened, got a couple of sprinkles, but picked up one fish early on, pic attached. A few BWOs hatching and some smaller fish rising to them. Water temp was about 50 degrees and very clear. Rained only a trace overnight.
