We just got our first shippemnt of these lines in today.

The new Rio Steelhead Scandi shooting head is designed for the Spey and Switch rod Steelhead angler’s specific needs, featuring an overall shorter head length coupled with a shorter front taper making it absolutely ideal for casting Steelhead style flies with Spey VersiLeadeers on Northwest Rivers. These heads are based upon designs developed by steelhead guide and outfitter John Hazel. Specific head size options have been carefully designed and fine-tuned for the common rods used by today’s modern Steelhead flyfisher. Line speed coupled with positive turnover is assured through this new taper. Anglers can now step into the Deschutes and proclaim “What wind-No Problem!” Rio’s proprietary XS Technology coupled with Rio’s new Skinny welded loops make these the slickest shooting, easiest use and convertible heads available today.

Those sound like great lines but one thing struck me as a little weird: they have somewhat strange increments. All the way through the series they vary between 15-40 gr. But, there is a 50 grain space between 385 and 435. Not a huge problem but you think they would have filled that for the multitude of rods that use a scandi line in the 400-420 range. Just seems odd that they would skip this spot but have some 15 grain increments at other places.

Looking forward to trying the lines.

Hi Mike R

Good observation...........

John and Amy Hazel have been the only Vision ACE Scandi line importers for several years now and I believe that they are trying to replace the Vision lines with the new Rio Steelhead Scandi series.

They get the Vision lines that are uncut from Finland (made by Cortland) and have to cut them to the right length and weight for each rod model and size, then put loops on both ends. This is a lot of work.

They have probably made these lines to fit some of the most popular Spey rod models exactly which is understandable.

It is nice of John and Amy to make these available to all Rio dealers in stead of keeping them for their store only.

I used a new Rio Steelhead Scandi head (31' x 350 grain) this week on the Rogue River on my Sage Z-Axis 12'6" #5 - 4pc Spey rod.

I used some 10' Versi leaders with some #6 winged classic steelhead flies and it cast very nicely for me.

For summer and fall steelhead fishing in Nor Cal and southern Oregon these lines are going to be extremely popular.
