Joey, my brother Pete & I headed up 88 for some fishing. We decided on Caples creek via the Lake Margret trail head. It was about a mile down to the creek. We started out meadow hopping, then bolder hopping and then bolder and cliff hopping. The water was clear and low and the fish were very spooky. We worked our way up stream about a mile and a half. The fishing was slow for the amount of effort. We came across a river otter with a big crawdad in his mouth. I began to wonder if the otter had cleaned out all the holes we were fishing since there was no where for the fish to hide. Peter and Joey landed a few fish while I was only able to stick a couple. We agreed that the return on investment was way too low and hiked back to the car for lunch. We drove over to woods lake to kick off the official recliner fishing season. Joey fished the creek while Pete and I enjoyed a couple beers and a fine cigar while contemplating fighting the high winds. Pete and I hit the lake first. Pete was hooked up within a minute after hitting the water. There were plenty of fish to be had. Most were small rainbows but I did manage a Brookie from the lake. Joey waded to the small island and was able to catch a few from it. The wind was very gusty and cold at times but it was nice to feel that streamer grab again. We headed home tired and sore from the hiking and hoping. When we got home Grandma had Hungarian goulash and cucumber salad waiting for us. It was nice to get out.

Enjoyed your post. Years ago when I lived in Pine Grove has some good days on Caples Creek below the dam. Also used to love going to Wood's lake as it is such a beautiful spot. Also like the "Hungarian Goulash" part to as my Mom was from Budapest :D.

I'm a 1st generation American and my parents emigrated from Hungary in 1956. Hungarians have very flavorful and spicy foods. Yum Yum

I fished Caples Creek on Wednesday. Pretty slow. I caught one 13 inch brown. I was happy though since I was just exploring new water. Water was kinda stained coming out of the lake.

Nice report, Joe. My wife and I spent 2 nights at Sorensen's last weekend, fishing both the E and W Carson. Caught a few. Stopped at Woods Lake on the way home Monday and managed to get a few on nymphs dropped below terrestrials. Never could get any surface action.

Someone told us there were nice fish landlocked in the stream. We passed on that.

I love that lake--when it's not windy, which is most of the time.

Are you still planning on moving to New Mexico?
