Well... hubby twisted my arm and took me trout fishin' this weekend:rolleyes:. Finished up my homework and headed up to Reno to spend the night last night so we could be on the water earlier this morning. Still had to get up at 4:30 am:eek:! After a good breakfast/coffee at the casino cafe, we headed to the Truckee River.

In the rain, we spooked four 16-20" fish right off the bat. Hubby ended up losing several and landing a few before lunch. I, of course, was still learning to unsnag my flies every third cast and trying to keep my balance while moving upstream ahead of hubby, so no luck for me. A couple of the fish he got were in spots I had just fished . What was I doing wrong????:-k

Dragged my butt back to the car for lunch, exhausted, pissed off, and hungry. Told hubby 'he who catches the most fish fixes lunch!' LOL

After lunch, I relunctantly tried again, this time listening a little more to hubby's mostly patient instructions and demos:rolleyes:. He kept telling me 'Set!', 'Set!', 'Set!' while I'm thinking 'Why? it's just another damn snag!' So, unhappy with my lack of response, he gives me another 'demo' and, of course, hooks a fish (on my rod)!

Ok, ok, I got this! Try again... SET the rod when instructed, and bam! Well, look at that.... a nice rainbow, 'cept it got off before hubby could net it for me :( . And, again... SET the rod, and there he is! This one I actually landed, about 16". Pretty good fight on my 6 wt. Ended up losing a 20 incher, all 3 of these out of the same hole. A few more tries and nothing, so next spot.

This one was deep and I could actually SEE the fish, several of them! This time hubby showed me how to 'short line' and sink the fly right down to the fish.... he, of course, hooked another, LOL.

Ok, let me try.... Took a few casts, but I did finally hook a really nice 18 incher. He was a beaut! Tried some more, got one more. This was the best fun I'd had all day!

By this time it was 2:30 or so, and hubby still wanted to try the Little Truckee before we headed home, although to no avail. Ah well... can't catch 'em all!

All-in-all, not a bad day, for trout fishin', LOL. Still not my cup o' tea, but at least I can say I caught one on the Truckee. Teased hubby on the way home I think the only reason he takes me trout fishin' is so he can out-fish me.... :D

Robin, all in all, sounds like you had a good day. I think. He definitely got you into some nice fish. With a little more seasoning, I'll bet you give him a run for his money. :D

Good story, Robin.... During a period of my life I spent a lot of time fishing for Salmon, Steelhead and Trout. Now, if I'm gonna fish Trout, the Truckee is one of my favorite rivers.

Fishing for Trout, now, is something I seem do to that allows me to pass time until I can go salt or warm water fishing.... Can't wait for Isla Cerralvo in October.

Robin, sounds like a banner day for the Truckee. Very glad you hooked up, many folks don't.
It's a great river, it just takes time. What you need now, is a 26"+ toad to rip all your line/backing off.
Get that, "deer in the headlights", look going.
That'll get you coming back!
