Fishing Report

Truckee River

The river remains in great shape from Tahoe City to Reno. Flows have been great and very consistent for a few weeks now. As the weather cools next week look for the fish (especially the Browns) to get more active.

California - The flows have dropped some coming out of Lake Tahoe over the past week. This should not have any significant influence on the fishing except for it will make it a little easier to get around. There have been some Golden Stones showing up, the Crayfish are starting to molt and the Hoppers are just getting started. This opens the fly fishing up to a wide variety of techniques. Hopper Dropper and Dead Drifting Cray's are a good way to start. On Hopper Dropper set-ups most of the fish are being caught on tiny nymphs like a Pheasant Tail in size 18 or 20. For the Crayfish thing, make sure you use enough weight to get your flies to the bottom which also means make sure you have a big enough indicator to keep it floating. Flows: Town of Truckee 314 CFS, Boca Bridge 506 CFS, Farad 514 CFS.

Nevada - The flows have been almost the same at about 380 CFS for about 4 weeks now. The fishing has been fantastic for the most part. Stonefly husks have been seen on rocks sticking out of the water and the Crayfish are starting to molt. We are starting to see Brown Trout with falls colors and it seems as though they are starting to get more active. Nymphing in the mornings with a Stonefly Nymph or Crayfish and a smaller dropper has been working well. The afternoons have been a little slow due to air and water temps but the fishing picks back up a bit in the evenings. The evening dry fly thing is a little slow but nymphing and streamer fishing can be done right up until dark and beyond.

East Walker River

Flows are 291 CFS. For the most part they have been in that range for a few weeks now. The hoppers are starting to show and the Big Ugly dry fly fishing has been pretty good. Streamer fishing has also been good. The water is a little high so be careful trying to cross. The best times to fish are in the early morning up until about 11:00 am and then again the last hour or two in the evening. If you can get down there on a cloudy day it can really make the dry fly thing happen. Burk's Spent Hoppers, Stone Dead Stones and Turk's Tarantulas are working for the dries and dark colored nymphs in size 16-20 for a dropper.

East Carson River

Flows are down to 93 CFS. This is normal for this time of year and just about perfect. The hoppers are starting to show here as well. Hopper dropper set-ups are the way to go as we get into the fall and lower water levels. As the water gets lower a more stealthy approach is also going to be necessary. Make sure you drift the edges and the shallows before marching right into a run. You will be surprised on how many fish are holding along the banks.

Little Truckee River

Flows are back up to 99 CFS. This is great news for the fish and the fishermen at the Little Truckee. Nymphing with either a dry dropper set-up or under an indicator has been working well. Smaller nymphs like PT's and HBI's in size 18-22 fished with 6X fluorocarbon have been catching the most fish. There has been some evening dry fly activity but mostly on cloudy days or after the sun leaves the water. Parachute Adams or EC Caddis is worth try in the evenings.

Knott Creek Reservoir

Looking for a place to get away? Knot Creek Reservoir is located 2 hours Northwest of Winnemucca Nevada and about a 4 hour drive from Reno. The lake is well known by the locals for having some outstanding trout fishing. The lake has plenty of water this year and the fishing has been good all season. Damsels, Callibaetis and midges are hatching in this high desert lake and fish are being caught on dry flies in the mornings and evenings. During the day stripping Wooly Buggers, Leaches, Sheep Creek Specials and Damsel Nymphs in 4 to 12 feet of water is also producing.
