My wife and I just returned from a great trip to Isla Blanca, north of Cancun.

Evidently, the permit fishing has been tough for several weeks, and this week was no different. Finally, on the 4th day, we found the permit, but TOO many permit! They were in huge schools of 20-50 fish, and almost impossible to approach. The only chance to avoid spooking these fish was to make perfect casts of at least 80ft.! .....not easy for this old dog!

I did manage one nice fish, taken on my new Crusty Crab pattern.

The tarpon fishing was as good as ever, which certainly made up for the drop in the permit fishing. As usual, bonefish were rarely seen, with only one or two shots for the entire week. There seemed to be fewer snook around, but we did manage to catch a number of nice fish. The 10 lb. + snook eluded us the whole week.

The weather was different this time, and it may have been the hot conditions (hotter than normal, according to the guide) that kept the permit off the shallow flats. ???
