Decided to head up the mountain again after work Tuesday afternoon to fish a favorite spot that I like to take people. It is right along the side of the road that most people just pass by and never fish. The flows are still to high to have a truly successful day, I worked hard to land 4 fish to hand, had a couple other risers but things will improve in a month or so. I am amazed at how just upstream about a mile or two the flows are much lighter, but at this spot I do not think it will fish real good for at least 3 to 4 more weeks. But this is a good thing. All my fishing in the mountains is with dry flies, you could probably catch more nymphing but I prefer dry flies. Another interesting thing was I saw skwala's and 2 hex's come off and I have never seen them there before, actually had a big skwala land on my glasses while fishing.

Thanks Scott

I think that there are tons of trout streams that are finally fishing well now.

Hey Scott,

Is that a Scott rod? Looks like their reel seat.

Did you use a 2/3 wt? (one of my favorite rods is my orvis 3wt for small streams).

Nice pics!

Eric, all my rods are TFO professional series, except for my Sage largemouth rod for bass. You can not beat the quality for the price. And when stream fishing I use a 3 weight, I have thought of going smaller but have ran into the occasional bigger fish that even made me a bit worried with the 3 weight.

What line you using on that TFO 3 wt? I have the same setup and I'm not happy with the line I'm using...

nice post scott. i like this stretch too. if it is the same one I am thinking. However, one thing i dont like about it, are the rocks and bushes you have to go thru to get to the river.......... you never know whats lurking behind a rock. lol

I do not remember what line is on it, I have been using the same line for 3 years. I plan to get a new one when I have the money and it will probably be a Rio Gold line. From what I have been told it is the line to get for that rod. The line I have on right now is green colored with a tan head.

Hey Scott,

I have the Rio Gold (bought from Kiene's...my plug :) ) on my 4 & 5wt rods. And
I have the Rio Grand (bought from Kiene's ;) ) on my 3wt.

Great lines. Love 'em.

I could not remember if it was the gold or grand for the 3 weight. Glad to hear you like them, that has been the general consensus on them that they are great lines. Now I just need to take my jar of change to Bill's and have him start counting all my coins.

From the looks of those bugs you should be hitting that stretch in Sept/Oct/Nov pretty hard. Your stimi's will really match the hatch then.

Eric, I have two TFO Signature series 3-weights (the green 2-piece IM-6 models Bill was selling for $79 a couple of years back) that I use for everything from small stream trout to panfish and small bass. While they cast fine with a 3-wt line, they actually cast much better with a 5-wt weight forward on them. I forget what brand I bought at the shop when I picked up the second rod but it is one of the inexpensive ones.

I up-lined the rod with the intent of tossing small hair bugs for panfish and bass, but it loads the rod so nicely at common casting distances that I use that one all the time and almost never break out the reel with the 3-wt line on it.

As one of the technically-minded posters over on Blanton's board likes to point out, each rod has a "grain envelope" in which it works well. By up-lining you just get into the sweet spot of the rod's envelope (and then out the other side) with less line out of the tip of the rod.

Ed can give the combo a testimonial--he gave it a try on a small creek last month back to back with the Z-Axis he won at Bill's Expo after a clean up day on the Rubicon.

I myself use all TFO rods, for myself and when i guide. and i love them. my first rod was the signature series 7'6" 3wt. and have a rio gold 4wt line and a rio trout LT DT3 for it as well. This rod has caught to many fish to count, and it has landed many fish in the mid 20s, which include browns, rainbows and even a 26" steelhead. The steelhead was a blast and a shock at the same time. After all the the 3wt keeps on kicking. Now i own a Prof 5wt switch, Prof 10' 6wt, Finesse 8'9" 4 and 5wt. and will be getting the Deer Creek 11' 7wt switch that is designed by Bob Meiser and Mike Kinney. They are awesome rods.

I would be careful when you read Scott's reports because he's one of those guys who will catch a bunch of fish no matter where he goes. Great stuff Scott!

FYI on the South Fork, the water is flowing high so the fishing is tough. You can catch a few but it should be real good in about 3 weeks. I was just on it last night and caught a few, but it was tough work.
