People planning visits to Caples Creek or the Silver Fork of the American River Aug. 2-6 are urged to use caution because of fluctuating water levels.

The El Dorado Irrigation District announced that test flow releases from Caples Lake, necessary to perform stream monitoring along Caples Creek, will cause stream flows and water levels to fluctuate. As a result, trail crossings are likely to be hazardous or unusable, a district news release states.

The stream monitoring is an environmental requirement of the federal license for operation of the district's 21-megawatt hydroelectric project. Officials said results of the monitoring, along with other information, will be used to determine stream flow levels necessary to meet the ecological resource objectives for Caples Creek.
