If your fly is ending up inside the mouth rather than outside, that is an accomplishment in itself. Sockeye are not known for biting the lure/fly...

They bite great when they still are covered with sea lice.

Yes, such is true. I was always far enough inland they had lost that pep.

It was always funny to hear the guests ask as they arrived, "Are the Sockeye biting?"

Everyone working at the lodge would laugh, because the owners favorite response, as he giggled, was "Oh Hell yes they are biting!"

hey guys,

the boss let me and another guide off tonight for a few hours. we took our spey rods out.

these fish are the most insane i have ever caught. im sad to say that they put steelhead to shame. sheer pound for pound force is incredible. line burning reel screaming runs upstream (which sound awesome on my hardy) happened until the fish was in the net

i love alaska

Nice going Lil' Stripe. Metallic sockeye are pure rockets. In SE Alaksa we typically target them in the salt as they stage before heading into sweet water. AK is truly a magical place. Glad to see you're absorbing the whole experience working up north. You have a life time of memories in the making.
Cheers, Ken

Sounds great! But that there's some fightin' words... :)

We have sockeye down here too, but I don't recall them being as tough. Guess the salt does that to a fish.

Back in '79 4 of us went up to the Brooks River to fish mainly for sockeye and they absolutely are incredible fighters and jumpers! These were not the colored up fish but bright silver. Averaged 4 to 6# (some to a bit over 10#) so not big but put a test on a 6 wt for sure!!!!!

We met Sister, an overly friendly grizzly that took apart our camp but that is another story!!!

Will say I kinda got bored after awhile and started hunting the rainbows that were hanging around the salmon!
