View Full Version : Unexpected surprise

Went out to one of the local bass ponds hoping to get into some topwater action. Water temp was around 76 degrees the wind was gently blowing, slight overcast, it should be a good day. Got a couple small bass maybe 5 or 6 inches then I got a hit that felt a little different. I see a swirl and cast back to the same area, I get hit again and fish on. The bite did not feel like a bass or a bluegill, then it jumped about 3 feet in the air. I got a rainbow and it is fighting hard. I know they plant trout in here in the winter time but did not think they would still be around on 76 degree water and fighting hard. Figured it was a fluke and kept on fishing, next thing you know another trout. I go for bass and get trout, I like it when I get surprises.

Nice, healthy looking rainbow. That'd be a good one even if you were going for trout instead of bass.

Same thing happened to me last month, same place. Kicked to the other side of the pond, first cast, 18" Bow, 2" or water. Didn't pick up anything else over 6".

Here's one I didn't expect when fishing stripers on the Feather.

I guess they plant lots of those little shallow bass ponds in the winter with hatchery trout.

I imagine they will all die in mid-summer?

Things like turtles, raccoons and birds will eat them so it is all good.
