Carry on travel question

I fly out of Oaktown to San Diego for some inshore kelp action on thursday. I want to travel super light with carry on only. Rods, reels, fly's cutters ect and gear bag. What should I expect at the airport? Are they go'n to let me bring flys and misc tools on board, snipper ect.? I've seen people check small bags at the door of the plane and pick them up shortly after departing.

Last year flying up to alaska the check in person figured out i was heading up to fish and asked to make sure all my flies or anything with hooks and my multitool in my baggage.
