Fishing Report

Truckee River

The river fished decent over the past week and run off took somewhat of a break. Although the Truckee was a little high it was very clear. There was an assortment of bugs coming off depending on where you were fishing. BWO's, Grey Drakes, March Browns and even a PMD or two were spotted over Memorial Day weekend. The weather over the next couple of weeks is supposed to really be nice so old man run off should return. It is starting to warm up in the upper elevations and the upper stretches of the river are starting to rise. This is usually a key indicator that the flows are going to go up. The highs in Reno are supposed to reach the mid 80's by next weekend and the 70's in Truckee. There should be plenty of bug life on the river highlighted by the carpenter ant hatch just right around the corner. The water from Lake Tahoe down through Truckee should remain fishable but once you get down through the canyon section below Boca bridge look for the flows to be pretty high. Flows as of June 1st: Town of Truckee 346 CFS, Boca Bridge 769 CFS, Farad 954 CFS, Reno 712 CFS.

Little Truckee River

Flows are 50 CFS. Stampede Reservoir is pretty low so look for flows to remain in this area for a while. The fishing has been really good over the past couple of weeks. Baetis and midges continue to be out in force. Both nymphing and dry fly fishing continue to catch fish. If the flows stay this low a more stealthy approach is going to be more important as the spring rolls along.

Davis Lake

Snow last week has put a damper on the report. The good news is nice weather is ahead and the bugs and fish are about to get happy. As the weather warms over the next few weeks look for blood midges to be out in force. Hanging midge patterns in red or black under an indicator or just stripping them in really slow with a sinking line should work for that. Damsel nymphs fished near the bottom in 6 to 12 feet of water is usually how the damsel season gets started. In the days to come look for the damsels to start to show themselves in shallow water and hopefully start to hatch. As this happens then an intermediate or even a floating line can be used. A long leader 9' to 12' in 3x should do the trick.

Frenchman's Reservoir

The fishing at Frenchman's has been great. A few cold days and some snow slowed it down temporarily last week but that is over for now. The fish at Frenchman's are very healthy and fight great. Anglers fishing blood midge patterns have been doing really well. Stripping snail patterns with a sink tip or full sink line is also worth a shot.

East Walker River

Flows have been around 180 CFS and 192 CFS for a couple of weeks now. The California side seems to be fishing better than the Nevada side with a little more bug activity and a few more fish being caught. It is still a small fly game for the most part. Dark baetis patterns, red copper johns, and midges in size 18-22 are getting the best results. Getting a good drift is a must. The thing most anglers struggle with when using small flies is getting a vertical presentation under their indicator. Higher flows and small flies make this an interesting achievement. As always, keep an eye on the flows before you go.

East Carson River

Flows are up to 1300 CFS. They have gone up and down over the past few weeks due to changing weather conditions. The air temps are only getting warmer so look for the flows to remain in the unfishable range for at least another week or so.

Pyramid Lake

The season is open until June 30th. Anglers continue to catch fish all over the lake. The water temperature is climbing and the fish are starting to creep back into deeper water. Stripping wooly's and tadpoles and nymphing under an indicator are both still catching fish. Early mornings and late afternoons have been the best. Any day with some chop on the water or some cloud cover will increase your chances for a good day for sure. Another tip that will help is to fish beaches that have less pressure from jet skis and boaters. Monument, Spider Point, Wino and blockhouse are all good options.
