ACTUALLY a great day on the farm. The pez gallo (roosters) and the bulls (toro's) put on a great show today. Here's the run down...

Once again, a long ride to the island but on flat waters. Great sunrise and beautiful views of Cerralvo Island. Still taking the trip all the way to Punta Pella. There you will find the bait guys, along with the lady fish, sierra mac, roosters, jacks and a few green jacks. After staying around there for a couple hours, we headed to the bajo, just of the south end of the island. We found a few skippies, something that I don't like to play with. Then we headed to Punta Arenas for some big roosters and jacks. My boat partner foul hooked a rooster in the dorsal and boy what time he had trying to drag that fish backwards. He started resting and hoping the fish would give up. I told him to start cranking on the Bauer reel so he could get the fish close to the boat for release. After 20 minutes or thereabout, the fish was spotted near the surface. Then the hook come FLYING OUT of the dorsal and almost got him. It looked to be around 30lbs.
After tossing a few more sardinas and no blow ups, we headed north towards the ship wreck. Ramon, swung the panga into a hard right turn and we were running down a HUGE school of roosters. Got the boat into position and threw a handful of bait. Nothing but refusals to the fly. Chased them for about 2 miles and finally gave up. Heading back north, we swung the boat into another hard right turn. This time it was a BIG, HUGE school of big jacks and they were on the prowl. One handful of bait and it looked like your typical washing machine. First cast, Fish ON and running. My partner said he watched a jack swim up to the fly, eat it and spit it out before he even thought about setting the hook. He set the hook after the fact.
I'm now down into my 30lb amnesia running line at least 185'. I use 200' of running line on my shooting heads. Then comes the yellow dacron backing. I told Ramon, let's chase the fish, times wasting, the school is still hanging around looking for something to eat and I thought we should oblige. Landed a 16lb Toro on a TFO Mini Mag rod. I tell you, this rod is getting a workout. My other rod is a TFO TiCrX 9' 9wt. All the heavy gear is staying in the room. The 9wt has landed roosters and jacks up to 30lbs.
Now, comes the good part. My other boat had another fantastic day. Today it was some rooster in the teens along with some jacks. But the show stopper was the 50lb+ Pez Gallo hooked caught and release and the rooster beach on the island. Wait until you see this pig. And this guy is a guide for trout and salmon in Alaska

I'll post pictures on the weekend. That's when I should find some time to gather all the photo's

Darian,

I don't think they will leave and hopefully the dorado will show up in numbers. They are catching good size dorado on the La Paz side so that means that they have too swim through the waters of Las Arenas.

I'm going to send you an email. I need a few things but going to check at sam's club to see if they have it here

Pack some crease flies and tuna tux patterns

See you next week
