My dad just recently caught his first trout, which has brought him a bit of excitement. I have been trying to get him to come out here for years to go after Steelhead. I am really sorry if this has been asked before and I did some searching for it, but I was hoping for some recommendations of guides or lodges in Oregon for Salmon/Steelhead fishing that would be considered affordable. With 3 small kids at home I can't visit the fancy expensive lodges! My father has never used a fly rod, so would there be any guides that would be willing to take a fly guy AND a bait guy? What time of year is the best? Winter run? Spring run? Fall run? (We are from Minnesota, so the cold weather wouldn't bother us). Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks a ton guys!

None of the guides mentioned take out gear fisherman. Also the waters they fish are no bait for the most part. For inexpensive lodging I would look here www.vrbo.com find an area you want to fish and see if there are vacation rentals near by. Also for a guide you will pay between 350 to 500 dollars a day. If it was me In this situation I would look for a gear fishing guide that also does fly fishing.

Thanks guys for the info! I really appreciate passing it along! I guess I misspoke, my dad is not as much set on being a bait fisherman as a gear fisherman. Do the guides strictly divide themselves between fly and gear? It's okay for gear to be within an artificial area, as long as the hooks are in compliance with the regulations of that section of river, correct? Thanks again for some nudges in the right direction!

Another suggestion for you. Get a copy of STS (Salmon Trout Steelheader) to get a starting point for guides. Shawn's suggestion of VRBO.com is excellent. I use it all the time and have yet to be disappointed. This way you can take mama and the kids on a very limited budget as well to enjoy the surroundings.
