Mid-May 2010 report:

Truckee River

Runoff season continues. The best place to fish the Truckee right now is near the town of Truckee. The flows through Truckee are 332 CFS. As you go down river it gets higher and higher. The water is still pretty clear and there are some fish being caught. Most of the fish are hanging on the edges out of the current due to the higher flows. So the river is fishable but wading is very tough and even dangerous if you do not know the river. In order to be successful, fish in areas where the edges can be accessed from the bank. Nymphing with a variety of flies have proven successful. Try golden stones, bird's nests and red squirrel nymphs. Streamers are also worth a try. Flows are; town of Truckee 332 CFS, Boca Bridge 763 CFS, Farad 946 CFS and the river though Reno is 758 CFS.

Little Truckee River

Flows are 101 CFS and have been for a couple of days. The fly fishing has been really good for the most part. The dry fly activity has been decent especially on cloudy days. The bugs are small and so are the patterns. Baetis dries and nymphs in 18's and 20's and midges in 20's and 22's have been working well.

Pyramid Lake

The nets area is open again to fishing as of May 17th. The water is still in great shape and there are some fish being caught. Fish have been cruising in shallow water for some time. This pattern should continue for another few weeks due to the water being a little colder than normal for May. The crowds are down and all the popular beaches are holding fish. Nymphing under an indicator as well as fishing shooting heads with wooly's and leaches continue to do well.

East Walker River

Flows are holding steady at 192 CFS. The fishing has been a little tough on the Nevada side but the California side is fishing well. Mostly due to the water being a little off colored in Nevada. Nymphing with small flies such as size 18 and 20 baetis and size 20 and 22 midges have been the way to go lately.

Frenchman's Reservoir

There has been a really good blood midge hatch going on mid day. Anglers fishing with blood midge patterns either under an indicator or stripping them in slowly using a floating or an intermediate sink line have been doing well. The fishing should only get better over the next month or so as the bugs really get going.

Davis Lake

The latest reports are that the fishing has been tough. It has been a long winter at Davis and it is taking a while to get going. There has been some midge activity but no blood midges or damsels yet. This could change anytime so keep an eye on the reports and as soon as we hear anything we will let you know.

East Carson

Runoff has the East Carson at unfishable levels at 1230 CFS. Wait at least a couple of weeks or more and check the reports again.
