Last year I spent quite a bit of time at Spicer and had no succes out in the lake. I ended up giving up and went traveling to nearby rivers and streams. But I recently picked up a 10' 6wt and an Intermidiate line for this reason, I will figure out that lake. I am looking for some quik advise on how to properly fish nymphs with out an indicator. Do you s l o w l y bring the line in or just keep out the slack? any info would be great.

If you can, pick up one of Denny Rickards' DVDs on stillwater fishing, or his books. Denny is one of the biggest proponents of fishing intermediate lines with nymphs and buggers in lakes and definitely knows how to "git 'er done".

He's a little full of himself, but as they say, "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up", and Denny most certainly can.

His website is: http://www.flyfishingstillwaters.com/

Probably the most important thing you can do is to understand the behavior of the bug you are trying to imitate. Theres tons of info out there on the internet.

I would recommend brian chan and skip morrises book, flyfishing trout lakes http://www.amazon.com/dp/1571881816?tag=askaboutflyfi-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=1571881816&adid=09S4RKKSVQ539J84QH4X& .

I have learned more from phil rowleys stillwater patterns book than any other book.

normally you will retrieve after the cast and like any other system you should vary things until you find something that works that day - that means vary the amount of time you let it "soak" before you start the retrieve and then vary your retrieve from very slow hand twist to a fairly fast retrieve. If you know how the insect you are imitating "swims" that would be your first clue on the type of retrieve to use though this is not always the case - sometimes the fish may key on a fast retrieve even though the bug you are imitating can't swim that fast.

A good example is many folks strip too fast when fishing a damsel - damsels move and wiggle like crazy but their forward momentum is pretty slow. However a relatively fast strip can often cause grabs that you would not otherwise get. On the other hand, sometimes that fast retrieve won't buy you a strike - you may have to cast it and essentially let it sit - just keep a tight line and make very small but quick strips that keeps the marabou tail wiggling without moving it much.

Most of the above description is the same whether you are using a floating line or an i line. In fact I normally do not do anything different if I am using a floating or an i line
